15 February 2023

A well-written product description that highlights your digital item’s significant benefits is likely to appeal to your customers and motivate them to download your digital product. In the marketplace, customers are 68% more likely to purchase items with descriptions than those that contain feature lists only

At TemplateMonster, we have some requirements on how to write product descriptions. Check them out before you start working on your copy.

TemplateMonster Product Description Requirements

To write a compelling product description, make yourself familiar with the key product description requirements in the marketplace.

Begin with the title of your product. This is the first thing that a person will see while landing on the product page. To make your offer stand out, provide it with a unique title. Make it descriptive and catching at the same time.

  • For example, if you upload a WordPress theme, then begin with a custom name (e.g. Monstroid).
  • Next, mention what micro-niche your product belongs to. For example, this can be business, travel, lifestyle blog, multipurpose, and other specifications.
  • Highlight a feature that makes your product so special (e.g. this can be a parallax WordPress theme, a basic WordPress theme with valid code, etc.).

In the TemplateMonster digital marketplace, we publish product descriptions that are at least 300 words long. This is enough to highlight your items’ major features and list the key benefits of your offers. To make your copy more readable, do not neglect to format the body of your text. Highlight the main features in bold. When you need to enumerate your product’s features, use the built-in bulleted list functionality.

The must-follow rule is making every product description unique. If that’s a non-exclusive item that you are going to describe, provide a unique copy that is different from the descriptions you offered on other web resources.

While writing a description for your digital product, do not forget that this short text will make your item more findable in search engines. So, do not neglect using keywords to grow online visibility.

Featuring target keywords in the product description, you can make your item more findable in the marketplace and through Google search. There are many keyword research tools that you may use for this purpose. For example, you may use Google Trends to check the popularity of a specific keyword. For example, if you consider using the phrase “travel WordPress theme”, then you will see that popularity spikes every three months.

Keyword Sheeter is another free keyword research tool that pulls thousands of autocomplete suggestions from Google. This is a great solution for everyone who wants to generate a lot of keyword ideas fast. It pulls up to 1000 keyword search results per minute and lets you export the results for free with just one click.

Google Search is the most powerful free keyword research tool, which offers an autocomplete functionality that reveals keyword suggestions as you type in the search request. You may also check the “People also search for” box that shows up on the search results page.

If you wish to go premium, try ahrefs.com. Along with plenty of cool SEO features, they include an advanced keyword selection tool. With its help, you can check what keywords your major competitors’ target, look through a selection of low and high-competition keywords, as well as check the search volume of the keyword phrases.

Don’t forget to add an excerpt to your product, there is a special field for that in the Product Uploader. The excerpt’s max length is 200 characters.

A product card within the listing will display the excerpt.

Things not Allowed in Product Descriptions

  • Special symbols like:
    • Booklets and other symbols are used in the marked list.
    • Following symbols – $,%, @, #, &, *, &, {,}, [,], ^ and others.
    • Letters with diacritics.
  • You can use HTML language, but special symbols will be erased, e.g., <b> brackets will get removed automatically.
  • Links to third-party websites, portfolios, social media profiles, professional networks, email IDs, phone numbers, or any other contact information.
  • Installation instructions, or any other documents that describe your product (this information should be contained in the documentation.)
  • Lists of files included in the product package.
  • Description of the product features should be enumerated in the feature list, which is uploaded to the Presentational Media field.

Tips to Make Your Descriptions Stand out

  • Every time to create a product description, write it with the user in mind. The copy needs to reveal a set of benefits that the users will derive from choosing your product. If there are unique or premium-quality features included in the archive, then it’s always a good idea to emphasize these in the text. Your copy should convince a customer that your digital item is the ideal solution that will make his web project stand out from the competition.
  • The product description needs to contain a clear statement for what purposes it’s better to be used. Also, write a couple of words about extra page layouts (if there are any) or other customization tools that your item contains. People are looking for cost-effective and feature-rich items that will help them launch web projects in the shortest time, with little effort.
  • One more thing that you need to mind is that your items may appeal to professional webmasters and business owners looking for the ideal visual presentation of their projects on the web. Are there any features in your product that can appeal to each of these two groups of users?
  • Emphasize that in the product description.

To get started, you may be inspired by reading examples of other digital items in the marketplace.

Make your copies remarkable, easy to comprehend, and useful. Make every product stand out from the competition.
